Chapter Six

Everyone was there around the large table in the formal dining room. Even Elodie’s mother, who was now Maureen Royale’s close friend, was there, and Mellie, who shouldn’t even be called the housekeeper but a family member. The only one missing was Carter’s older brother Michael, and Luci could tell he was sorely missed. She herself looked forward to meeting him and connecting with him like she had with his other siblings.

It was like having a pack of older brothers who could sometimes be annoying, but in the end, you couldn’t help but love them and their antics. They ate and talked while beneath the covered dessert plates were pictures of the baby in 4D. Luci’s heart raced in excitement, waiting for that moment when they all would see the face of Little Bitty like she and Carter had. Michael already had his. She’d made sure to scan the image and send it to him in an email, and he called her cell phone almost instantly.

“Is this who I think it is?” His laugh was filled with excitement.

“Yes, that’s your niece.” Luci smiled while she held the phone between her shoulder and ear. “You are the first to have it. The rest of your family will see it tonight.”

“Then I won’t go crazy and call my mother, because trust me, you’d hear her screaming from your office,” Michael said, amused.

“Since you’re not here, you get the honor of knowing her name first, also a secret till later,” Luci warned and told him the name she and Carter had chosen.

“That’s beautiful,” he said. “I can’t wait to meet her and to give you a big hug. You are a damn superhero doing this at home without medication...What’s it called, an epidural?”

“I may be begging for that by the end of it,” she laughed. “My dad is here, and after he terrified Carter for fun, it seems to be going okay.”

“And you don’t have any regrets about living at the mansion with Carter?” Michael asked. “Mom can be a lot, and I’m her favorite son.”

She laughed at his comment. “She’s okay, and I’m getting accustomed to people being always around. I like it. It’s something I didn’t have growing up. Dad was gone so often, and by seventeen, I was taking care of myself instead of staying with his best friend’s family. This feels good. Carter can be here for his parents, and we all get to watch Little Bitty grow up.”

“And when you have to leave on assignment, you have a family support system,” he added.

“I may be doing more assignments closer to home,” Luci admitted. “I’m not stopping my work, but it’s going to be remodeled.”

“As long as you’re happy with the end results,” Michael said. “Hey, I gotta go, someone is yelling my name.

“You be careful, Michael. Come home safe,” she told him.

“Always. Later.”

Luci refocused on the conversation that was going on around them while her father told a story about them living on Easter Island when she was fourteen.
